Internal Audits

Financial advancement encompasses all activities and programs undertaken by an organization to develop support from its various constituencies.  The mission of a development program is to inspire, direct and coordinate the full range of external relations programs.  The internal audit is an invaluable assessment tool in determining an organizations strengths, weaknesses and preparedness for a campaign.  The goal is to establish priorities and offer recommendations that allow the organization to function to its fullest capacity.

An internal audit involves a thorough assessment of all development activities, initially focusing on gift history, including major gifts, special events, direct mail, foundation and corporate campaigns, alumni and parent campaigns, planned giving and government grants.

The assessment process further examines the organization's

  • style and philosophy

  • goals and objectives

  • strategic plans

  • operating assumptions

  • budget allocations and projected fiscal outcomes

  • relevant internal and external materials

  • staff job descriptions

  • flow charts

  • levels of current support

  • staff and volunteer training procedures

  • research and technology systems

  • internal and external communications

  • public relations

  • board and advisory committees

  • departmental and administrative relationships
